ThreadiverseNZ runs two platforms that interconnect with each other (as well as hundreds of other instances run by others).
Both of these platforms are similar to Reddit, except they are run by a network of volunteers instead of a large company. You don't need to understand the technology to use it, but if you're interested in more information on how it works, see About the Fediverse.
Which should I join?
Our two platforms are LemmyNZ and PieFedNZ. The features and approach differ between the two, so read on to help you decide.
Lemmy
The Lemmy software has fewer features than PieFed, but has been around longer and has more options for mobile apps or website interfaces. The instance is connected to almost every other Lemmy and PieFed instance and so you will see the widest variety of content here. Our approach with LemmyNZ is to use a light touch outside of our own communities, so you might find while browsing content that comes from other instances that people may not be as nice to each other as they are on our communities. You can block users, communities, or particular instances so many people prefer to customise their own experience using these features.
LemmyNZ also does not allow users to create their own communities (the equivalent of a subreddit), as we have chosen to disable this feature to keep the focus on a small number of NZ related communities. If you want to make a community, you might want to choose PieFed.
Join LemmyNZPieFed
PieFed is newer software than Lemmy, but has many features that Lemmy does not. For example, PieFed has topics of interest you can select to start you off, the ability to react to posts with emojis, follow a post to get notified of replies or reminded of a post or comment, and the ability to schedule a post to be posted at a later time. PieFed also has specific post types like polls or Q&A that Lemmy does not have.
In general, PieFed has focused on making it easier for a new user to find content that may be of interest to them, so it's a good choice for someone not familiar with this sort of thing.
PieFedNZ has all the PieFed features, but we are also running this as a bit of an experiment. Remote content will be removed more aggressivly, users banned more agressively, and we will be more active about disconnecting from other instances where they are not positively contributing to the experience we want to build.
Some people really value getting to see all opinions and want to decide for themselves what they want to see. In this case, you'd better choose LemmyNZ which has a reasonably light touch moderation approach.
