LemmyNZ is part of a connected network of sites known as the Fediverse. Users from many different sites will interact, but you will always log in at Lemmy.nz.
Lemmy is similar to Reddit, except it's run by a network of volunteers instead of a large company. You don't need to understand the Lemmy technology to use it, but if you're interested in more information on how it works, see About the Fediverse.
Banned from Reddit?
Some people think Lemmy is a place they can say anything without fear of being banned. This is only true if you run your own instance. At LemmyNZ we have rules, and breaking them may lead to a ban.
Many users are banned from Reddit for reasons that cannot be explained, and they are welcome if they follow the rules.
How to join
LemmyNZ requires an administrator to approve new accounts. If you are from NZ, living in NZ, or connected to NZ, you are welcome to join! We require users to apply because we get a lot of automated spam and cannot pay for 24 hour staff to manage this.
If you are not a spammer and answer the question then your account will be approved. Please make sure you answer the question! We are usually pretty quick to approve your account if you apply within NZ waking hours.

Can't submit application
If you can't submit the application, you can join the Matrix chat and ask for help (see below).

If you don't fully answer the question, your application will be declined.

Users whose applications are declined are deleted after approximately a week to allow others to sign up with that username.
I was approved but I can't log in
If you could log in before, but can't anymore, maybe you got banned! While it's rare, it does happen. Search for your username in the modlog. Maybe it's a mistake, please message @Dave on Matrix.
Maybe you enabled 2FA and now you can't get in? We can reset this if we can verify it's you in another way (e.g. you supplied an email when you registered).
I didn't get a response
It would be unusual to take more than a few hours to have your account approved if you answered the question and applied in NZ waking hours.
We don't require emails, so if you didn't provide one when you registered then we can't email you when your account is approved or declined. Try logging in, if you were approved it will work.
