Communities ​

Communities are a way of grouping posts, and are the equivalent of subreddits from Reddit. When a user wants to post a link, meme, or image, they will choose a community to post it to. Users can subscribe to communities, and posts from the communities they have subscribed to make up their "Subscribed" feed (sometimes called "Home"). This is in contrast to the "Local" feed (posts to any community where the community itself is on LemmyNZ) and the "All" feed (all posts that LemmyNZ knows about).

Finding and subscribing to communities ​

Due to the nature of Lemmy, finding the right community can be a little confusing. A good way to search communities is to use the Lemmyverse.net community browser.

First, click the house at the top right to set your home instance (to "lemmy.nz"), then you can search for a topic of interest and find communities. Once you've set your home instance, you can click on a listed community to be directed to the community on LemmyNZ, allowing you to subscribe.

If you are the first subscriber from LemmyNZ, a handful of posts will be retrieved, but historic content and comments on these posts will not be retrieved. However, new posts and new comments posted will be available from this point forward. This is due to how Lemmy instances communicate.

Blocking communities ​

Don't like something? You don't have to see it! You can block users, communities, or even any posts from a certain instance!

How to do this will vary depending on which website frontend or mobile app you are using. On the default LemmyNZ website, go to your settings, choose the Blocks tab, and add a user, community, or instance to the appropriate list.

Note that in your settings you can also choose to hide bots or NSFW content. If you uncheck "Show Bot Accounts" then you won't see bot content (such as posts automatically copied from Reddit). Careful that you don't check "Bot account", as this marks your account as a bot and so people who have disabled bot accounts won't see your posts and comments.

Creating communities ​

Many instances allow users to create new communities, especially the large instances with a global audience. LemmyNZ only allows administrators to create communities. This allows us to keep communities related to NZ, and focus on a smaller curated selection of communities instead of having users spread over many inactive communities.

As users can only create communities on their own instance, this means a LemmyNZ user can not create a new community. However, remote users are able to be appointed as moderators, so you can be appointed to moderate communities on other instances. This also means you could workaround this restriction: create another user on another instance, create a community, then appoint your LemmyNZ user as moderator.

If you decide to create a community using this work around, be sure to submit it to Lemmy-federate. This ensures the community is passed to other instances to allow users to find and view the content in their "All" feeds. You should also submit it to the !newcommunities@lemmy.world community so users know about it.

NZ Communities ​

Almost all active communities related to NZ are on LemmyNZ, and you can see local communities by viewing the "Local" feed. However, we keep a curated list here as there are some communities on other instances that you may want to be aware of.

Note that due to the connected nature of Lemmy and the different ways different apps handle links, the below links may or may not work nicely for you. The communities are linked in a way that will work best for LemmyNZ users.

  • !newzealand@lemmy.nz - share posts about Aotearoa. For NZ related posts that don't fit better in another community. This is by far the most popular NZ community on Lemmy, and almost anything except politics is suitable there.
  • !politics@lemmy.nz - For posts about NZ politics or where the government is central to the article.
  • !offtopic@lemmy.nz - For memes, random thoughts, or discussion of international news for NZers.
  • !support@lemmy.nz - Ask for help on Lemmy.nz, also used for announcement posts
  • !averagenz@no.lastname.nz - For posting pictures showing NZ landscapes, scenes, or other depictions.
