About LemmyNZ
LemmyNZ is one of many connected websites running the Lemmy software. The LemmyNZ team does not develop the website, we only run one node of the network using the software developed by the Lemmy development team. There are many Lemmy websites all connected together, for more information on this see About the Fediverse. You can register at LemmyNZ and see content from across the whole network.
LemmyNZ is run by a team of volunteers in our spare time. The website is hosted in a datacentre in Auckland, NZ, and is paid for through member donations.

Our server
After the first week of running on a $2/month VPS and very quickly outgrowing it, LemmyNZ was migrated to a proxmox container on co-located hardware. The server was run by a team that also ran other fediverse services for NZ such as mastodon.nz and pixelfed.nz, but we had exclusive use of our container with some pretty powerful specs. This continued for almost three years, but eventually they wound down operations and passed some sites to other operators, and so we needed to move.
In February 2026 we moved to the current Virtual Private Server (VPS) with Zappie Host, in an Auckland data centre.
The server has:
- 4 vCPU
- 9GB RAM
- 160GB SSD
Most images are proxied through the server, and are cached in object storage located in Amsterdam, Netherlands as Backblaze do not have a New Zealand or Australian data centre and local object storage is significantly more expensive.
LemmyNZ uses around 800GB of bandwidth per month, with some savings from Cloudflare's image caching.
