Matrix chatroom ​

LemmyNZ has a Matrix chat room for LemmyNZ users for general discussion. It also serves as a place for updates when the site isn't working (for example, during upgrades or unscheduled downtime).

What is Matrix? ​

Matrix is a chat platform, but behind the scenes it is federated (like Lemmy). This means users can choose from many different Matrix providers (like email), but the experience is that of a chat app (like Discord).

Why Matrix? ​

For administrators running Lemmy instances, Matrix is very popular and is where almost all coordination between instances happens. Therefore we (running LemmyNZ) are already using it.

How to join ​

Get an account ​

If you don't already have a Matrix account, you will need to sign up. Matrix generally encourage either self-hosting, managed hosting, or to join their home server matrix.org. sign up for an account on matrix.org

Get an app ​

Next, pick an app. Element is the flagship app built by the same team that created the Matrix protocol, but there are other options as well.

  • SchildiChat Next (mobile) - download here.

There is a full list of clients, but it's likely easiest to start with Element and branch out when you find a reason to.
